Obesity rates climb, as does the stigma (ContributorNetwork)

Comment | In a more aware society of political correctness, although long stigmas have disappeared from the public consciousness. We have elected our first Black President, women serve alongside men in war zones and gay marriage is legally recognized. But for a group, the stigma placed by the company is in fact spread. The wave of acceptance has not yet washed people struggling with obesity.

According to a study in current anthropology, participants interviewed around characterized world fat people as lazy, unattractive and lack of self-control. This negative view of obesity was prevalent even in regions which have historically favoured an excess of body weight.

Why this question? Childhood obesity rates have tripled in the last 30 years, and it looks not as the trend will reverse any time soon. The news gets even worse, as the just-released study revealed negative attitudes of society towards people who are overweight contributes to a decrease in health. In simple terms, obesity can lead to health problems such as heart disease, hypertension and diabetes; Fat facing negative societal messages see their health decline more quickly.

There are more overweight schoolchildren today than at any other time in history. These students are filled with more negative attitudes. African-Americans were able to obtain the n - word of the American vernacular and degrading remarks about homosexuality became less acceptable daily, but the idea that fat people are lazy and unwanted is gaining acceptance.

Is this normal with you? If your child has come home from school crying because she was often derided on its weight, respond you by saying that it must eat less and get off his lazy butt, or would you embrace its acceptance and compassion?

Our attitude towards obesity suggests that we give a value greater than the thin body types, physically fit. At the same time, our actions suggest that we also consider fast food and time spent on the couch with a remote control. This lag between cause and effect is damaging to our children. The question is, how the divide and reverse the rate of obesity climbing?
