Male victims of domestic violence may show signs of PTSD (HealthDay)

(Tuesday, 12 April HealthDay News) - the men who are victims of domestic violence by their female partners may develop psychological trauma, such as post-traumatic (PTSD), depression and suicidal thoughts stress disorder, finds new research.

The researchers watched a group of 302 men who sought professional help after faced with what researchers called "intimate terrorism", which refers to high levels of violence and behaviour controlling by female partners.

Another 520 men participated in a survey about their relationship. Sixteen percent of these men, said only suffered minor acts of violence and mental abuse during arguments with their female partners. This type of abuse was referred to as "common violence couple."

In the two groups of men aged 18 to 59, there were associations between abuse and symptoms of PTSD. However, the men who had "intimate terrorism" had a greater risk of developing the PTSD.

The results appear in the April issue of the review of the psychology of men & masculinity.

"This is the first study to show that the PTSD is a major concern for men who support violence between partners and ask for help," study leader Denise Hines, an assistant professor of research in the Department of Psychology at the Clark University in Worcester, Mass., said in a press release of the newspaper.

A second study in the same journal, summary research on domestic violence against men. Prior research has found that men are less likely to report against ill-treatment injuries, and police is less likely to stop the women accused of violence against men.
